Be informal and approachable
Here are some questions for you. Are you able to open up to a shop assistant spontaneously and chummily when asking for advice in a store? When was the last time you were able to quite naturally start talking to the lady in the window seat on a plane? And, while you are waiting in a queue, do you cross your arms and frown in a ‘don’t-you-dare-even-try-to-talk-to-me’ pose?
It is quite possible that you still blush when strangers talk to you. Moreover, you might confess that introducing yourself to others still brings you out in a metaphorical – even a physical – sweat. In both cases, you’ll want to become more informal and approachable.
If you do feel uncomfortable with others, this is probably one of the bigger tasks of this book. We know that. Yes, you want to become youthful but, you say, can’t that just sidestep having to interact with strangers? Is this you? If it is, the comforting message is that, no, you don’t have to do everything recommended by this book. We all have Achilles heels and pushing on with other wisdoms which don’t bring you out in cold sweats is the right approach.
However, that’s no excuse for many others who just let themselves off the hook too easily. A little more effort and confidence and they would be there. Young Brains use informality and approachability to help them cross the invisible line between a cold distancing with a stranger and a warm welcoming approach. The kind of contact that implicitly says: ‘I don’t know you, but it is possible we could become friends.’
Living the Wisdom
We know it’s tough, but next time you are facing a stranger in a railway carriage or similar situation, gather up your willpower and open up a conversation, stay informal and most of all be approachable. Success is when the other person responds warmly to you (probably sometime after the initial exchange). Congratulate your younger self by treating your Young Brain to a sticky cake and coffee when you arrive at your station!
